2004 Sonoma Cutrer "The Cutrer" Russian River Valley Chardonnay

This bottling from Sonoma-Cutrer comes from the vineyard they often refer to as Home Ranch, 271 acres surrounding the winery, and is rarely offered to retail stores. The vineyard's alluvial soils are a reminder that this site, sitting 300 feet above sea level, used to be ocean floor—that is until Mt. St. Helena erupted. These hardened seabed and volcanic ash soils, lacking in water and nutrients, stress the vines, concentrating the flavors in the fruit. The resulting wine is quite evocative. Flint and mineral aromas on the nose give way to ripe apple and stone fruit notes with hints of musk and clove. With air, the wine begins to reveal a floral bouquet. Tip the glass to your lips and you'll get notes of granite minerality on the attack, which is a lovely foil to the apple, pear and caramel notes that follow. The finish is spiked with lime and honey, framed by the toasty flavors of barrel fermentation and the buttery richness of full malolactic. An exceptional vintage, this drinks beautifully now but will continue to reward for years to come.
